About MoneyMob and the Loans and Phones Project

MoneyMob Talkabout is a not for profit organisation delivering financial literacy education and counselling with and for people in remote Indigenous communities, to help them positively manage their money.

The program, based in the APY Lands, provides a one-stop shop for local community members to interact with the broader economy in a safe and supportive environment. Teams also visit other communities in South Australia from Pipalyatjarra to Indulkana providing services on an outreach basis.

The "Loans and Phones" project aims to increase consumer awareness about payday loan and phone contracts, terminology and complaint mechanisms, provide people with basic tools to understand debt and contract affordability, and increase awareness of consumer complaint and financial assistance avenues. In addition, an important aim of this project is to train peer educators within each community, who can act as a source of information/knowledge for others when entering into these types of purchases.

About the Opportunity

MoneyMob Talkabout now has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Community Engagement Officer to join their Loans and Phones Project team, based in Alice Springs, NT.

Reporting to the Financial Counsellor, this newly created role will see you engaging with Indigenous community members, delivering informal culturally appropriate community education sessions that deliver key messages and strategies supporting financial literacy.

Your key areas of responsibility will include:

* Engaging with Anangu in each community, through as many means possible - informal conversations, community gatherings, working with other service providers and their client groups/base, meetings with families;

* Identifying at least one (and preferably more) Anangu community champions in each community who can be trained as a source of knowledge/information about loans and phones, for other community members; and

* Developing simple, plain English educational curriculum and visual tools which will teach Anangu about mobile and landline phone contracts, and Small Amount Credit Contracts (Payday Loans).

This role will be well suited to adaptable and resilient candidates with a true passion and desire for contributing to the wellbeing of remote communities. Along with a strong commitment to social justice, it's important you understand the balance involved when supporting individuals within the community - your aim will be to provide skills and knowledge needed for these individuals to gain independence in regards to successfully managing their finances.

Project management skills will also be essential, as will experience working with Aboriginal, CALD and/or low literacy/numeracy communities (ideally in a remote setting).
